Job Overview

Electrical engineers design and build the electrical systems that power… well, everything.  For a world that is plugged in 24/7, this means that electrical engineers are in high demand across the nation—especially in high energy and production areas like Mississippi.

On an average day, an electrical engineer will oversee the creation of communications systems, motors, and production equipment.  The best engineers will be able to draw up intricate blue prints, communicate effectively with team members, and analyze and solve problems along the way.  They are creative, analytical, and teamwork-oriented.

Across the state, employers are paying electrical engineers an average of $80,000 per year, plus benefits.  Salaries quickly grow beyond six figures with experience, however.

Employers require a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, with some requiring a professional engineering license through organizations like the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.

Job Overview

Job Overview

Civil engineers design and supervise large and complex construction projects, including roads, buildings, industrial complexes, airports, tunnels, and systems for delivery of water, wastewater and energy.

On average, civil engineers may make about $80,000 per year, but experienced engineers can make $90,000 or more.  In today’s growing energy and manufacturing economy, civil and environmental engineers are in high demand. Additionally, a growing population and America’s aging infrastructure will require a steady supply of civil engineers to solve complex problems.

As a job candidate, you will be required to have a bachelor’s degree in engineering.  Many companies also require engineers to obtain a professional engineering license through organizations like the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.  Civil Engineering programs are offered at 3 Mississippi 4-year universities – Mississippi State University, Jackson State University, and University of Mississippi.

Competitive candidates for engineering positions will demonstrate advanced mathematical competencies, including algebra, physics, and geometry; demonstrate critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities; apply mathematics and knowledge of physical and life sciences to correctly solve unanticipated problems; employ statistics and data analysis in experimentation; be aware of safety standards and comply with professional codes and standards; think creatively to improve controls processes that meet company standards; pay close attention to details; be able to work independently and in a team setting; and remain flexible to respond to challenges and/or feedback from colleagues, customers, or others.

Job Overview

Job Overview

Mechanical engineers are some of the most diverse, talented workers in any production facility.  They can work at any stage of the process and may deal with projects large and small.  Typically, a mechanical engineer in an energy or advanced manufacturing facility oversees the motors and machines to ensure that the process is running efficiently.  They then may make adjustments or suggestions to increase productivity and profits.

Because they are so versatile, the best mechanical engineers are creative and analytical, with an ability to quickly see and solve problems.  They work in an exciting, hands-on environment where no two days of work are the same, so they should welcome breaking out of the routine.

Employers in Mississippi are currently starting the average mechanical engineer at around $80,000 a year plus benefits.  As an employee stays with the company and showcases a strong work ethic, that salary can easily grow to well over six figures by the time he or she retires.

As with almost all engineering positions, Mississippi employers require a four-year degree in engineering; some prefer certification by a professional organization, as well.
